In more recent years, Nigerian international students have been looking towards alternative foreign destinations with high education standards, serene environments and cheap tuition fees. An example of these alternative destinations is Norway, Finland and India. According to the 2015 Open Doors report from the Institute of International Education, India is the 12th most popular country for US international students overseas. Indian universities tuition fees vary, you could study a degree course for as low as $3,000 – 6,000/year. Living expenses in India are relatively low with accommodation (on-campus or off), meals and transportation costing about $210.40. Total student spending will total about $1,800/year (Topuniversities.com).

The country is booming with a virtually large population, a fast-growing influential economy (BRICS), and a world standard higher education system over the past few decades.  There are a vast number of colleges, institutions and universities in India to choose from disciplines in medicine, science, technology, engineering and business. There are also numerous public and private institutions to choose from as well.

In order to attend an Indian university, college or institution as a Nigerian international student, you can apply to your desired institution via its official website during the admission application openings or by using the Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) website. This is a centralized university admissions service for international students to aid in applying to more than one Indian university at the same time. Note that students must be 25 or under at the start of their course to be eligible to apply for undergraduate admission, but there are no age limits for postgraduate studies. Other admission eligibility requirements include the following:

  • Completed admission application forms
  • Entrance examination payments using SWIFT transfer, credit/atm cards, e-payment
  • Upload your application forms, additional documents and certificates to the DASA website
  • Send your entrance examination test scores directly from College Board USA to DASA i.e. SAT, GMAT, GRE
  • Previous school certificates, grade sheets (transcripts), etc.
  • Passport photographs (3.5cm x 3.5cm), birth certificates, international passport, etc.
  • For undergraduate studies, the application fee (currently $4,300) which goes towards your university’s non-refundable registration fee ($300) and the tuition fees of the first semester ($4,000)
  • For postgraduate studies, the DASA’s application fee is currently $2,300, of which $300 is for your registration fee and US$2,000 is for tuition fees for the first semester

  1. Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore

This is a public university for scientific research and higher education located in Bangalore, India. The Indian Institute of Science offers a great academic and research network in the fields of technology and engineering in its 40 departments.
