If you have ever traveled outside Nigeria, you will understand the significance of this important document to various embassies around the world. It is a very important immigration documentation to determine your character and eligibility as an upstanding citizen with a substantially clean criminal record in order to get the intended country’s’ visa.

You’ll be assessed based on the following:

  • If you have been sentenced to 12 months or more in prison, or multiple sentences that add up to more than 12 months in prison. A suspended sentence is considered a prison sentence.
  • You have been convicted of escaping from immigration detention in another country
  • you are or have been a member of a group or organization or have an association with a person, group or organization that are suspected of involvement in criminal conduct
  • If you’re a suspect of being involved in people smuggling, people trafficking, genocide, a war crime, a crime against humanity, a crime involving torture or slavery, or a crime that is of serious international concern
  • Your past and present criminal or general conduct shows that you are not of good character
  • If it has been determined that you posed a security risk to another person in the form of stalking, physical or sexual abuse
  • You are subject to an adverse security assessment by the Nigerian Government

Police clearance/character certificate

A police certificate is an official document issued by the Nigerian police to determine if the applicant has any outstanding criminal records or activity from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) that he/she may or may not have committed. Criminal records may include arrests, conviction, and criminal proceedings. According to Wikiprocedure, Police certificate is also known as good citizen certificate, good conduct certificate, police clearance certificate, or judicial record extracts.

Applicants have to submit fingerprints and certain personal information such as addresses, date of birth, place of birth, etc to get a criminal record check via the police records database. The Nigerian police force will charge a fee, such as N6, 000. If no record found, the police certificate will indicate so in written form such as a certificate. Anyone from any nationality who has lived or lives in Nigeria for more than 30 days is eligible to get this clearance certificate.

Police Clearance Application Requirements

If you reside in Nigeria:

You should apply in person to the Central Criminal Registry, police headquarters in Lagos. You must include the following when applying:

  • Your valid passport
  • Two passport-size photographs
  • Applicable fees (N6,000)

If you don’t currently reside in Nigeria:

You should apply by mail to the Commissioner of Police. You must include the following in your application when sending:

  • A pre-paid return courier envelope from a top courier company such as DHL, UPS, FEDEX
  • Three copies of your international passport bio-data page with necessary visa stamps, etc
  • Three recent passport photographs
  • Three copies of a properly filled application form
  • A set of fingerprints taken and certified by a recognized police authority or the Nigerian embassy or consulate
  • An international money order payable to the Nigerian Police Force, CID in the sum of N6,000 i.e. Western Union bank draft
  • Police clearance application processing fees

Note: Police certificates can be certified at your nearest Nigerian embassy or consulate for a fee.

Police Clearance Application Process

  1. Complete your application forms required to obtain the Nigeria Police Clearance Certificate in block letters, black or blue ink pen, complete your Name, Address, Tribe, Place of Birth, Year of Birth, attach a recent passport photograph, and your real signature. Click here to download the forms
  2. Take, review and assess your fingerprints, ensure that they are clear and properly taken. Use a clear blue or black ink to take your finger print impressions on the boxes required. This is necessary for police data base check on you, to verify that you’re not a criminal or have a prior conviction
  3. Get a clear colored photocopy of your passport biodata pages for legibility and clarity
  4. Make and verify your payment
  5. Submit the Application to the Police Head Quarters, Alagbon, Lagos
  6. After processing, wait and get your hard copy certificate
